Tenets of the Brain

Tenets of the Brain

#1. Change can occur only when the brain is in the mood

#2. Change strengthens connection between neurons engaged at the same time

#3. Neurons that fire together, wire together

#4. Initial changes are just temporary

#5. Brain plasticity is a two-way street and we can either drive brain change negatively or positively

#6. Memory is crucial for learning

I really like this summary of the requirements for brain change. It could also be flipped around to provide guidelines for tasks or activities that would help stimulate brain change:

1. Exercise your brain when you feel engaged.

2./3. Pick a task or brain exercise that repeats the same mental patterns, helping to reinforce the "co-firing".

4. Keep at it!

5. Aim to strengthen core brain functions or help stimulate useful positive change.

6. Make sure to train your focus and memory.

7. Pick a brain exercise that you find challenging and rewarding.
